Self-service bar-code reader and totaliser - uses added customer identification card with reliability coding

In a self service retail outlet the customer is issued with an individual bar code reader. The bar code reader is released from a central dispenser at the entrance by the customer using a personal `wipe' card. During the shopping the bar code reader displays the article information and stores this as items are taken from the shelves. At the check-out the unit is plugged into the register and a `total due' sign is displayed for payment. A cross check is carried out on the merchandise by means of secrete weight collating of the individual items, in which weight items of the shelf should equal items presented. Random checks would be carried out under which the items would be totalled at check-out in the normal manner. The service card carries a customers reliability coding which reduces as discrepancies are discovered.
