This device comprises vertical guides fixed on the external wall of the furnace on either side of the entrance opening which is intended to be closed by the door (1), a cradle (6) extending in front of the door (1) and mounted slidingly on the guides, struts (11a, 11b) which pass horizontally through the cradle (6) in a sliding manner and the ends of which close to the furnace are fixed to the door (1), while their opposite ends are fixed to a frame (12); jacks (16) and (17) supported by the cradle (6) respectively make it possible to lay the door (1) in a sealed manner flat against the entrance and to push the door back horizontally to move it away from the entrance. This device makes it possible to clean the internal face of the door (1) of slag or metal debris before closing again, and consequently to obtain satisfactory sealing between the door (1) and the circumference of the entrance. <IMAGE>
