Prodn. of nuclear fuel mixed oxides, from a nutrient soln. contg. U (IV) and other metal in the required ratio, involves (a) partial electrolytic redn. of the U (VI) to a mean valency of 4.2-4.6, the soln. being stabilised, if required, with additives such as urea or hydrazine; and (b) spraying the soln., using a gas preheated to 500-800 deg. C, through a nozzle into a heated multi-zone appts. for solvent evapn. in the first zone, denitrification and at least partial calcination of the individual powder particles at 700-1000 deg. C in the second zone and deposition of the resulting mixed oxide at 150-500 deg. C in the third zone.
