A run-resistant stocking fabric having transferred or spread needle loops is produced on a circular rotary cylinder machine by means of transfer elements 23 which may consist of pegs projecting from a disc 21 secured to a shaft 22 mounted at an inclination to the cylinder and rotated at a speed deviating from the speed of the cylinder. The disc 21 is mounted above the needle cylinder such that a peg may engage a previous course loop and transfer it laterally to engage over the needle of an adjacent wale, Fig. 10b. Alternatively a peg may engage the loop on a needle and spread it over the adjacent needle, Fig. 11. Instead of a disc the pegs may project from flexible arms which can be deflected upwardly by the needle action during loop transfer. Alternatively, transfer bits 33, Fig. 8, mounted in a housing 31 rotatable on a shaft 32 may be cam operated to project and retract as the housing rotates to effect the loop transfer or spreading. |
