The invention relates to a method for the chlorine-free bleaching of celluloses having an alpha -cellulose content of more than 90%, preferably of bucked or kiered cotton linters, in which more than a 75% degree of whiteness is achieved by means of oxygen in a one-step process, characterised in that bleaching is carried out with oxygen which has been obtained by disproportionation of peroxo compounds in the pH range 6-13 and the bleaching time is between 15 and 150 min, depending on the bleaching temperature of 35 DEG C to 15 DEG C.
