The device uses a constant current source (Ks) supplying the capacitor (K) with two opposing constant currents of equal magnitude, for charging and discharging the capacitor (K), with the respective time constants (T1,T2) being measured. The measured time constants are fed to an evaluation stage (Ae) providing an output signal (AS) representing the difference between them. The correct capacitor polarity is indicated when the charging time (T1) is less than the discharge time (T2) and a false polarity is indicated when the charging time (T1) is greater than the discharge time (T2). Pref. the time constants (T1,T2) are measured via a voltage measuring device (Spe) connected across the capacitor (K) coupled to a timing stage (Ze).
