Slitting or cutting of chestnuts is carried out in several (e.g. four) steps in which individual chestnuts are initially sepd. from a heap, positioned according to their geometry, slit or cut and then discharged onto a second heap of processed chestnuts. Equipment for carrying out the process has various devices, including a supply container for unslit chestnuts, mounted on a base plate which is inclined longitudinally and transversely w.r.t. the horizontal plane and which is supported on four legs of different length. Supply container pref. has a wall opening facing a separator disc of similar thickness as the bottom of the container and is inserted into an arcuate container aperture having the same radius as the disc. Disc has openings along part of its periphery to accommodate individual chestnuts to be transferred to larger openings in which the chestnuts are slit by a slitting or cutting tool. USE/ADVANTAGE - Used to slit edible chestnuts to avoid bursting on roasting. The process is fully automatic.
