A suction head 1, Fig. 3, for supporting a panel 13 as it is moved in the direction of an arrow F, comprises a chamber 8 partially divided by walls 6a, 6b provided with flaps 9a, 9b. Sealing skirts 12 are provided and driven rollers 11a, 11b move the panel over the suction head. The flaps 9a, 9b are normally open under their own weight but when the space 7 is closed off by the advancing panel the suction is great enough to progressively raise the flaps. As the panel closes the spaces 7a, 7b the respective flaps open again until the trailing edge of the panel uncovers the space 7 again. When this happens, the suction is insufficient to support the panel which is gently deposited on an adjustable table 14, Fig. 4. In a second embodiment, Fig. 5, a power-operated closure 15 is provided for the space 7 and the flaps 9a, 9b are positively opened by arms 16a, 16b connected thereto. The suction head may be movable.</p> |
