A cable railway has a carriage (5) which is driven by a cable (15) which is wound around a driving pulley in a housing (11). After passing around the driving pullet the return cable is guided by guide pulleys (8,9) and attached to the opposite end of the carriage. The driving mechanism consists of a driving pullet (2) and a turn around pulley (1). The cable passes twice around both driving pulley (2) and turn round pulley (1) before passing out of the drive housing. The axis of the turn round pulley is inclined at a small angle to the axis of the driving pulley, so that the grooves in the turn round pulley are correctly aligned with the grooves in the driving pulley.
