A method of dispersing a gaseous medium within a body of liquid metal characterised by (1) disposing at least one plate within the body, the plate having at least one part extending in a plane at or near the horizontal; (2) delivering a gaseous medium to a location beneath the plate and (3) vibrating the plate at such frequency and through such vertical amplitude as to cause fragmentation of the gaseous medium and dispersion thereof around the edges of the plate and through the body.
