Lockup clutch control according to alcohol concentration

With transmission control in vehicles having engines fuelled by mixtures of alcohol and petrol it is a problem to compensate for undesirable changes in performance produced by changes in the alcohol/petrol fuel ratio. The subject invention provides a system in which the alcohol concentration is sensed by a sensor (24) and a torque converter lockup clutch LC locked up at a vehicle speed selected in accordance with the alcohol concentration and throttle position to improve the vehicle fuel consumption and consistency of performance. The operation of the lockup clutch is also preferably dependent on shift position and torque converter oil temperature.
