A gear testing apparatus comprises a motor 7 arranged to rotate a support 1 for a gear 2 to be tested, a clutch 5 to transmit drive from the motor to the support, a stop member 10 adapted to be moved into the path of a leading flank of one of the gear teeth to stop rotation of the gear and the support and to cause the clutch to slip and a sensing member 9 adapted to engage a leading flank of another one of the gear teeth and to cooperate with the stop member to sense the spacing between the leading flanks of the two teeth. The member 9 is associated with a measuring instrument 8 and the clutch 5 is magnetic to enable the torque transmitted before the clutch stops to be adjusted in accordance with the weight of the gear by adjusting the energizing current. |
