Clear storage stable propylene glycol solns. (I) of V complexes contg. ammonium ligands and C2, and free from pptd. solids for 17 days min., are made by: (a) reacting excess prolylene glycol at 80-130, pref. 90-100 deg. C with ammonium vanadate or a mixt. of NH4OH and a V oxide soluble in propylene glycol, (in ratio of mole propylene glycol:g atom V of 7:1 to 20:1, pref. 8:1 to 16:1; and (b) stripping the prod. from step (a) (10-100 mm Hg) to give a propylene glycol soln. of a V complex amounting to 70-95 wt.% of the charge, contg. 0.1-3 wt.% H2O, i.e. (I). Opt. the stripped prod. is filtered. Pref. ammonium metavanadate and V2O5 are used.
