Practically uncrosslinked graft polymers (I) consist of (A) a base polymer of 40-100(wt.)% polyphenylene ether and 0-60% vinyl-aromatic polymer, (B) a monomer with a C=C double bond, in which the double bond C atoms are substd. by only one CO gp. and (C) opt. other olefinically unsatd. monomers. The novelty is that (B) also contains 2 CO gps. linked through a C=C double bond, with the structure (i). Pref. (B) is mono-2-acryloxyethyl maleate (B1) or mono-2-methacryloxyethyl maleate (B2). The graft polymer contains 80-99.9, pref. 90-99.9% (A), 0.1-20, pref. 0.1-10% (B) and 0-20, pref. 0% (C). Graft polymerisation is carried out at 170-350 deg.C (practically) in the absence of a free radical initiator.
