PURPOSE:To prolong the life of the repeater and to excite plural optical amplifying fibers by switching an in-use side exciting light source to a stand-by side exciting light source under predetermined conditions. CONSTITUTION:The in-use exciting light source 5 operates and the stand-by side light source 6 turns off. The exciting light emitted by the light source 5 is distributed by an optical coupler 9 to multiplexers 3 and 4. The multiplexer 3 multiplexes the exciting light from the optical coupler 9 and the input signal light from an optical fiber 7 and sends the multiplexed light out to an optical amplifying fiber 1. Similarly,the multiplexer 4 multiplexes the input signal light from an optical fiber 8 and sends it out to an optical amplifying fiber 2. Then when the in-use light source 5 exceeds a voltage equivalent to a half of initial light output electric power, the light source 5 turns off and the light source 6 operates. Then a light signal is sent from the light source 6 through the optical coupler 9, multiplexers 3 and 4, and optical amplifying fiber. |
