When a received image is recorded on roll paper, and when the roll paper on which the image is recorded is cut in a standard size to output the image, the leading end portion of the received image is removed so that the image is recorded on the roll paper. If the length of the recorded image is less than a standard size length, blank space is added to the image to output the recorded image in a standard size. This permits the received image to be recorded in real time and a recorded image of an appropriate standard size to be obtained. There is thus no need for a large capacity image memory. <IMAGE>
