The subject of the invention is a method for cutting a block of solid material (2), such as a block of marble, granite or the like, for example, into slices. This method is noteworthy in that it consists in: - holding the said block using a plurality of assemblies for opposed holding forces which are exerted on two opposing faces (31, 32) of the said block, the said holding forces assemblies being respectively located in parallel holding planes (11-14) spaced from one another by a nominal distance, and in - making cuts (21-23) in parallel cutting planes (24-26), the said cutting planes being parallel to the said holding planes and respectively located between the said holding planes.
