Each of the cassettes (16) is encoded with a representation of its contents (papers, single or multiple forms, etc.) by arrangement of four binary code pegs (34) set by insertion of e.g. a ball-point pen into a hole (46) in the top. Gps. of four intermediate pegs (50) protrude from a vertical frame (48), in a corresp. code formation which is readable by an optical barrier (64) on an acceptance unit (20) which scans each cassette (16) in passing, and stops at a reference mark (66). ADVANTAGE - Device is flexibly adaptable to requirements w.r.t. different kinds of sheet.
