In the stripping of H2- and CO- contg. gas mixts. by partial condensation and then rectification at low temp. to form an H2-rich and a CO-rich stream, the condensate from the partial condensation is expanded in a sepn. column for withdrawal of a liq. CH4 fraction from the bottom, a gaseous H2 residual gas fraction from the top and a liq. CO product fraction from the middle. Appts. for carrying out the process includes a divided separator column, the upper part of which acts mainly as an H2 stripper and the lower part of which acts mainly as a CO/CH4 sepn. column.
