A radio transmitter (1) is applied to an accessible end of a test lead (3) whose course is hidden to introduce an l.f. modulated h.f. carrier. A radio receiver (5) is applied to locate the max. radiation of the carrier frequency (12) from the lead. This procedure is carried out by a test probe (6) with a movable lead serving as a receiving aerial for the receiver. This probe is moved along the path where it is assumed the lead runs as long as audio (7) and visual (11) indicators display the max. of the carrier frequency. In other words, the probe is moved so that the max. is always displayed. The visual can be a LED and the audio a loudspeaker. ADVANTAGE - Rapid location for single lead or one within a bundle even if live. Requires no return lead.
