Organotin compounds are prepared by reacting (a) an organic mercapto tin ester with 1 or more SR'COOR" groups bonded by the sulphur atom to the tin atom of a hydrocarbyltin group, R' being an alkylene group with at least 2 carbon atoms and R" being a monovalent hydrocarbon group, with (b) not over 1 molar amount, based on the number of COOR" groups present, of a diorganotin oxide or sulphide or a hydroxyalkytin acid or thiotin acid. As stabilisers in halogen-containing resins, particularly polyvinyl chloride and copolymers of vinyl chloride with vinyl acetate, vinylidene chloride, styrene, acrylic compounds and the like. They are particularly suitable for rigid compositions. The unpleasant smell of known tin stabilisers is avoided. The new compounds have a high tin content and can be used in small amounts, for example 0.1-5.0% preferably 0.1-3.0%, of the resin. |
