摘要 <p>Vol. of a biological sludge is reduced by mechanical disintegration followed by biological treatment. An initial biological treatment stage may be used before the mechanical disintegration. The disintegrated sludge may be anaerobically stabilised and a usable gas recovered, or may be aerobically stabilised. The disintegrated sludge is passed into a sedimentation vessel from which the floating solid material is decanted and passes to the biological treatment stage. The remaining liq. is subjected to a separate biological treatment, which may be in an already existing treatment unit. Disintegration takes place by use of high pressure or by grinding, and the sludge may be passed through the disintegrator a number of times before going to the biological treatment. Floatation in the sedimentation vessel may be by means of the evolved gases, or air or oxygen. USE/ADVANTAGE - In the disposal sludges e.g. from existing biological water treatment plants. The biological cell walls in the sludge constituents are broken up by the mechanical treatment so that the sludge can be reduced in vol. by a further biological treatment process and eventual disposal of the residual material is thus made easier.</p>
