An actuating spindle 24 which can be rotated by hand or with a motor is threaded on a piston rod 40 as far as a slide 16 entrained by the actuating spindle 24, its securing jaws 18 being positioned on the workpiece. Then, a piston 38 of the piston rod 40 is propelled by means of pressure in order to displace the piston rod 40 and therewith the actuating spindle 24 as a unit and to secure the workpiece. A protection tube 52 surrounds the actuating spindle 24. After releasing a support plate 32, the slide 16, actuating spindle 24 and protective bush 52 may be removed for cleaning of the casing. <IMAGE>
