A tape reel driving apparatus for a magnetic tape recorder which includes a sliding friction coupler provided in a power transmission path from a motor output shaft to a tape reel shaft, a detector for detecting a diameter of a tape wound on a tape reel and a controller for controlling the degree of the power transmission of the sliding friction coupler in response to the diameter of the tape detected by the diameter detecting means.
