Method and apparatus for casting reactive metals in a mould with a hot upper part. To prevent oxidation of the ingot (6) to be obtained, a supplied protective gas is conveyed (9, 11) to the porous refractory material (1) of the upper part of the mould and to any joints. A closed chamber (7) is provided between the hot upper part (1) and a casing (8) in order to receive this protective gas, formed from SF6, possibly mixed with other gases.
