The sorting mechanism comprises a conveyor which moves the fruit to be sorted along a guide which leaves a passage for the fruit between itself and the conveyor, the height of this passage being different at different points along the conveyor path. The guide surface facing the conveyor extends in a continuous line, and the height of the guide above the conveyor is independently adjustable at either end of the guide. The guide surface may be in a flexible material, and there may be adjusting screws regularly spaced along its length. The guide may be pivoted and spring-loaded.
