The hybrid combustion engine combines three separate thermal cycles, i.e. compression, heating and expansion of air, expansion of combustion gases, and expansion of steam produced by heating water. Intake air passes through an axial-flow compressor and from there into a four-stroke rotary piston unit where it produces power after heating by heat exchange with a burner chamber. The exhaust gas from the chamber drives a turbine and heats water in a heat-exchanger. Part of the pre-compressed air passes through a centrifugal compressor and then moves the heated water into a steam chamber in heat exchange with the burner chamber. The steam drives a turbine. The compressor, exhaust turbine and steam turbine stages are combined on common rotor discs.
|
