The polyesters (I) are based on A) 30-60 mol.% 4-hydroxybenzoic acid B) 20-35 mol.% mixt., in molar ratio 1.04:1-19:1, of B1) terephthalic acid and B2) isophthalic acid C) 20-35 mol.% mixt. of C1) hydroquinone C2) 4,4'-dihydroxydiphenyl C3) 0.5-5 mol.% C3a) 2,7-dihydroxynaphthalene and/or C3b) resorcinol and/or C3c) dihydroxy cpd. of formula (I) X = CH2,C(Me)2, S, SO2, O, or CO, opt. substd. in nucleus by Cl, Br, Aryl, or 1-8C alkyl or alkoxy, and/or C3d) cpd. of formula (II) X' = NH2 or OH with substits. m- or p- to each other, opt. substd. in nucleus by Cl, Br, aryl, or 1-8C alkyl or alkoxy where molar ratio C1:C2 = 0.1:1-2.67:1, molar ratio B:C = 0.9:1-1.1:1. Prepn. of (I) by one-stage polycondensation in melt of A, B1, B2, C1, C2, and C3 in presence of 5-60% molar excess, on total OH content, anhydride of 2-6C alkanecarboxylic acid, opt. with postcondensation in solidphase. Dimensionally stable mouldings contg. (I) are claimed. C3 is pref. C3a and/or C3b or C3c where X = C(Me)2, S, SO2, O, or CO. C3d is 4- and/or 3-aminophenol. Molar ratio B1:B2 = 1.5:1-10:1. Molar ratio C1:C2 = 0.5:1-2.33:1.
