A magnetic tape for electromagnetically storing data has a transparent section (1) provided with marks that form optically readable information. This information can relate to parameters of the magnetic tape or can constitute additional information related to the tape. Preferably, the marks are shaped as bands (2, 3, 4, 5) opaque to light that extend transversely to the longitudinal direction of the transparent section (1) of the tape and can have various widths or spacings. In the case of a DAT-cassette, the mechanically scannable tape information that was until now provided on the cassette housing can be alternatively stored on the transparent section (1) of the tape and/or be supplemented by any desired amount of additional information.
