Surface coated hard member for cutting tools and abrasion resistant tools comprises a base metal (a parent metal) and a number of laminated coated layers (at least 10 layers in total) laminated one upon another. These layers are layers of a carbide, a nitride or a carbonitride of Ti, Zr or Hf and layers of a carbide, nitride or cabronitride of Al. Each layer is 0.01 - 0.2 micron in thickness. The total thickness of laminated layers is 0.5-10 micron. Coating is pref carried out by a PVD method such as spattering or ionplating. The laminated coated layer can be formed partially or fully on the surface of the parent metal. Pref a cutting tool comprises a parent metal (WC, 20wt% TiC, 10 wt% Co) and 10 layers of TiN and AlN (the thickness of each layer is 0.2 micron) which are laminated one upon another. The total thickness of the coating is 2 micron). |
