Surface coated hard member for cutting tools and abrasion resistant tools comprises a base metal (a parent metal) and a number of laminated coated layers (at least 10 layers in total) laminated one upon another. These layers are layers of a carbide, a nitride or a carbonitride of Ti, Zr or Hf and layers of a carbide, nitride or cabronitride of Al. Each layer is 0.01 - 0.2 micron in thickness.
