METHOD FOR PREPARING GLASS ARTICLE

PURPOSE:To prevent the breakage of a tapered glass fine particle thin layer by converting a glass fine particle layer formed on the outer periphery of a specific starting member into a transparent glass. CONSTITUTION:Dummy rods 4 each having a tapered part 6 and a larger diameter part 5 than the outer diameter of a glass rod 1 at least on the rod 1- connecting side of the dummy rod 4 are melted and connected to both the ends of the glass rod 1 forming a silica glass rod 2 for the core of an optical fiber and a silica glass 3 for a part of the clad of the optical fiber to prepare a starting member. The starting member is rotated on the axis of the starting member at a rate of 20-60rpm, and a raw material gas (e.g. SiCl4) for the production of clad glass is fed into the center of an oxygen-hydrogen burner 16 disposed at a position facing the starting member to flame-hydrolyze and heat- oxidize the raw material gas. The produced glass fine particles are deposited on the periphery of the starting member to form a glass fine particle layer 18, followed by heating the formed layer to convert the layer into transparent glass.
