The acid-resistant copper/manganese catalysts described, which have high mechanical strength, are intended for use in the hydration of fatty acids, glyceride esters of fatty acids or lower-alkyl esters of fatty acids to give fatty alcohols with the same number of carbon atoms. The catalysts are obtained by: (a) reacting aqueous solutions containing water-soluble copper(II) and manganese(II) salts with alkali at a pH of up to 6-10; (b) separating off and drying the precipitate of copper(II) and manganese(II) hydroxide obtained; (c) if required, processing the dried catalyst to granular or lump form; (d) if required, subsequently calcining the catalyst at a temperature of 500-900 DEG C over a period of 0.5-24 hours.
