PURPOSE:To reduce the occurrence of secondary jamming, by discharging exposed originals by providing a prescribed delay time after starting the next original reading operation. CONSTITUTION:The automatic original feeder of this invention is provided with a paper discharging roller 24. This roller 25 is started to rotate at the same speed simultaneously with a carrying belt 5 and stopped a prescribed delay time after the stoppage of the carrying belt 5. Moreover, even when the carrying belt 5 is stopped to read an original 6 under a still state, a read original 23 to be discharged is smoothly discharged to a discharge tray 13 without stopping. Therefore, originals are smoothly moved and, even if the copying machine is stopped for some reason, secondary jamming of originals does not occur and handling is made easy since the original 23 is discharged.
