PURPOSE:To provide a lighter ignited when the tip end of a cigarette is drawn near to or press fitted to a catalyst layer by providing a heater generating heat by power supplied, and the catalyst layer generating heat by being heated by the heater to cause a catalytic reaction. CONSTITUTION:When it is desired to light a cigarette, a lid member 20 is dis placed in the direction of an arrow against a resilient force exerted by a coil spring 28. As a result, an air intake port 30, a light emitting element 34, and a lighting portion 40 are exposed on the lighter. At the same time, since the lid member 20 is concurrently used for a switch for power supply to a heater 56 and the light emitting element 34, the heater 56 and the light emitting element 34 are energized. The heater 56 heats a catalyst layer 54 by its heat generating effect. At this time, when the temperature of the heater 56 exceeds 300 deg.C, a catalyst constituting a catalyst layer 54 causes a chemical reaction and increases the temperature thereof. Accordingly, a smoker with cigarette in his mouth, press-fits its tip end onto the catalyst layer 54.
