DIFFERENTIAL LIMITING DEVICE

PURPOSE:To prevent the occurrence of stick slip even when used under a high torque and to improve the durability by putting two friction plates together in a specified manner and forming at least one of the friction surfaces from a specified composite. CONSTITUTION:A differential limiting device which is provided with a first friction plate and a second friction plate put together and integrally engaged with the relatively rotatable two members of a differential gear in the rotating direction and in which at least one of the friction surfaces of these friction plates consists of a carbon fiber reinforced carbonaceous composite as mentioned below. This composite comprises a sinter of carbon fiber reinforced carbon, which has a constitution wherein carbon fibers alone or together with fine inorganic particles are integrally buried in a carbon matrix having a mosaic structure wherein fine particles optically anisotropic when observed under a polarizing microscope uniformly agglomerate. The percentage of the separated interface between the carbon fibers and the carbon matrix is at most 10% of the whole interface, and which has a density of 1.65g/cm<3> or higher.
