PURPOSE:To obtain aryl aromatic carboxylates in high selectivity by the coexistence of a protonic acid or a solid acid in reacting phenols with an aromatic carboxylic acid in the presence of a tin compound-based esterification catalyst. CONSTITUTION:Phenols are reacted with an aromatic carboxylic acid in the presence of a tin compound-based esterification catalyst (an organotin compound is especially preferred) to provide aryl aromatic carboxylates. In the process, high selectivity is attained by the coexistence of a protonic acid or a solid acid (hydrochloric acid, nitric acid, heteropoly acid, p-toluenesulfonic acid, silica, alumina, etc., are especially preferred). An aromatic dicarboxylic acid, especially terephthalic acid is preferably used as the aromatic carboxylic acid to produce a diester. |
