Means for use in the treatment of pulmonary embolisms characterized in that it comprises a catheter provided with a device for generating shock waves by means of electric arcing between two electrodes. The catheter comprises a tubular body (3), its proximal end (3a) being designed for connection to an apparatus for generating electic current pulses, at least one longitudinal port in which are lodged two electrically conducting elements and a distal end (3b) for treatment with two electrodes by means of electric arc generating shock waves. A cuff (5) is fixed near the end (3b) comprising, in the example shown, two slots (3g, 3h) for propagating the shock waves.
