The mechanical vacuum pump has a working volume which is cyclically enlarged and reduced by an electric motor. It operates through the displacement of a membrane wall which defines the volume. Valves are provided between the volume and the inlet and outlet openings which are likewise cyclically opened and closed, and the side of the wall (3) directed away from the working volume (11) forms part of a crank chamber (12). USE/ADVANTAGE - Pump in which the motor performance requirement is reduced and the life of the membrane is extended.
