The fireproof cladding (5) for the base of a cupola furnace has cooling tubes (12) embedded in it for coolant to flow through. The cooling tubes (12) are embedded in a mass which has good thermal conductivity with good compression, with a high proportion of graphite, using metal and especially copper tubes (12). Cooling tubes, and a conductive and compressible mass, are used as an intermediate layer (4) below the fireproof cladding (5). The cooling tubes (12) are arranged in parallel, with gaps between them, or they form a serpentine cooling path. ADVANTAGE - The system gives an extended furnace working span, with a consistent operation.
