PURPOSE:To improve the display brightness and the light emission efficiency, by properly selecting the hole diameter of a discharge cell, the diameter of the through- hole of a cathode electrode, and the distance between a front plate glass and the cathode electrode. CONSTITUTION:The distance (D) of a discharge space 11 for flooding a negative glow 9 between a front plate glass 1 and a cathode electrode 3 is selected to be 25lambdae<= D<=70lambdae while satisfying d1>d2 and 25lambdae<=d1<=500lambdae where lambdae is the average free stroke of the electron of the encapsulated gas, d1 is the diameter of the discharge cell hole, d2 is the hole diameter of cathode electrode and D is the distance between the front plate glass and the cathode electrode. Consequently the negative glow 9 will spread from the upper face of the cathode electrode 3 to the circumference of the edge of a through-hole 8 and the lower face of the cathode electrode 3, to increase the depth of the negative glow 9 in the direction of display or in vertical direction. Consequently the state of light emission display through eye viewing is also brought onto the front plate glass 1 thus to increase the light emission display area. |
