The f-value of the zoom lens changes in dependence on changes of focal length with fully open shutter. The focal length can be set to a desired value by an electromotor drive. A range finder (14), exposure meter (23), an electronic flash unit (30) and film speed sensor (29) are provided in the camera. A first data table (35) provides optimal focal lengths of the zoom lens according to various subject ranges. A second data table (36) provides optimal focal lengths according to certain subject ranges taking into account, and in dependence on, the effective range of the flash unit. A zoom focal length determining unit (37) sets the focal length according to the subject range. The first data table is selected when the exposure value is not below a set value, taking into account the brightness of the scene as measured by the exposure meter, the film speed and the f-value at a certain focal length and fully open shutter. The second table is selected when the exposure value is below the set value. ADVANTAGE - Focal length automatically matched to subject distance. Prevents underexposure by taking into account range of flash unit.
