Circumferential sub-division of the tread pattern of a tyre is determined where the profile has oblique grooves with bent ends and diagonal elements arranged arrow-fashion. The tread has V-shaped modules arranged circumferentially and these have sub-divisions at the centre and shoulders of the tread, their narrowest width being determined by equation (I) and the oblique angle alpha for the tread is determined by equation (II) (where BKPU = narrowest width of sub-division, RAD = o.d. of tyre in mm. p1 = number of subdivisions of equal width, v1 = ratio (proportion) of widths, m = number of different widths, alpha = angle of orientation of the module elements P at centre of tread, or its rib as measured to the centre line x-x, BR = width of one rib at the centre of the tread at least 13 mm. n = number of divisions of the elements P1, P2 etc. at shoulder, k = portion of profile positive in the tread). ADVANTAGE - The sub-division improves road adhesion in wet conditions, drainage, steer, wear, noise emission. The tread is divided into sections with different lengths depending upon characteristics.
