PURPOSE:To efficiently obtain the subject substantially straight-chain polymer having a high molecular weight by carrying out oxidative coupling polymerization of diphenyl disulfides and thiophenols in the presence of an acid in two stages using a catalyst. CONSTITUTION:The objective polyarylene sulfide is obtained by carrying out polymerization reaction of diphenyl disulfides expressed by formula I (R<1> to R<8> are H, halogen, lower alkyl or lower alkoxy) and/or thiophenols expressed by formula II (R<9> to R<12> are same as R<1> to R<8>) in the presence of an acid such as a protonic acid or a proton donative substance, preferably using a vanadium- based catalyst preferably in a solvent such as nitromethane preferably at 0-40 deg.C under a pressure of oxygen in the first stage, then adding preferably hydrochloric acid-containing methanol to the resultant reaction mixture, precipitating and separating the polymer or polymer-containing substance and subsequently carrying out polymerization reaction of the aforementioned separated polymer, etc., under the same conditions as those in the first stage. |
