In this method, steps are provided for generating reference characters represented in the form of lines (ideals) and for storing these reference characters in a main memory of the trainable character recognition device for training a trainable character recognition device used, the number and type of reference characters corresponding to the character set from which characters are to be recognised. For recognising characters, steps are provided for reading the digitised character to be recognised into the character recognition device, as a result of which the grey-value image concerned is provided, preprocessing of the characters to be recognised so that the relevant character can be classified, comparing of the preprocessed characters with all reference characters previously learned by the character recognition device, making of a majority decision for determining the reference character which corresponds to the character to be recognised with the greatest number of part-features, and generating of a result signal from the character recognition device for further processing of this signal. ……
