Beta-(4-substd. phenyl)-ethyl -cyclohexane cpds. and heterocyclic analogues of formula R1-(A1-z1)n-A2-CH2CH2-A-Q (I) are prepd. by reacting a reactive methylene cpd. R1-(A1-Z1)n-a2-A2-CH2-Y (II) with a 4-substd. toluene or heterocyclic analogue of formula CH3-A-Q (III) in the Q = CN, 5-R2-pyrimidin-2-yl, 5-R2-pyridin-2-yl or, if A = pyrimidin-2,5-diyl or pyridin-2,5-diyl, also p-R2-phenyl; R1 and R2 independently = H, 1-12C linear or branched alkyl, on which one or more CH2 gps. can be replaced by -O-, -CO-, -O-CO-, -CO-O- and/or -CH=CH- but 2 hetero-atoms are not linked directly; A = 1,4-phenylene, opt. with F, Cl or CN substit(s)., or, if Q = CN, 1,4-phenylene, opt. with F, Cl or CN substit(s)., in which 1 or 2 CH gps. can be replaced by N; A1 and A2 independently = 1,4-cyclohexylene, opt. with F, Cl, Me and/or CN substit(s)., in which 1 or 2 non-adjacent CH2 gps. can be replaced by O and/or S; 1,4-bicyclo(2,2,2)octylene; or 1,4-phenylene, in which one or more CH gps. can be replaced by N; or, if Q = 5-R2-pyrimidin-2-yl, 5-R2-pyridin-2-yl or p-R2-phenyl or R1 contains an asymmetrical C atom, A2 can also = a single bond; Z1 = -CO-O-, -O-CO-, -CH2CH2-, -OCH2-, -CH2O- or a single bond; n = 0, 1 or 2; Y = a reactive releasable gp. New beta-(3-fluoro-4-cyano-, 3-chloro-4-cyano- and 3,4-dicyanophenyl) -ethyl-cyclohexane cpds. are of formula R1 = as above; X' = F, Cl or CN.
