The faulty ignition detector includes; a pressure sensor (110) for detecting the pressure in a cylinder of the IC engine, an interface circuit (119) and a differentiating unit (120) for the output signal of the pressure sensor. A signal processor (115) processes the output signal of the differentiating unit to produce a working stroke pressure information signal. A threshold value calculator (116) computes a threshold value for the faulty ignition determination. A comparator (117) compares the working stroke pressure information signal with the threshold value. A faulty ignition determination unit decides whether a faulty ignition has taken place in a cylinder on the basis of the comparison. ADVANTAGE - Gives high degree of reliability even if output signal of pressure sensor has displacement component superimposed on pressure component designating actual pressure in cylinder.
