Prodn. comprises treating an aq., alcoholic or aq.-alcoholic soln. (II), contg. pantothenic acid or a pantothenic acid salt alone or together with pantolactone and/or beta-alanine, at 60-120 deg C with a strongly acidic cation exchange in the H+ form, isolating pantolactone (IA) from the treated soln. and eluting the exchanger with a dilute base to obtain bta-alanine (IB). Pref. soln. (II) is passed through the ion exchanger in a column which is heated to 70-90 deg C. When an alcoholic or aq. alcoholic soln. (II) is used, the alcohol is a 1-4C alcohol, esp. (m)ethanol. USE/ADVANTAGE - Used esp. to recover (IA) and (IB) from the mother liquor obtd. in calcium D-pantothenate mfr. from e.g. calcium beta-alaninate and D-pantolactone. Provides a simple recovery of (IA) and (IB) in good yields and pure form.
