Engine underspeed and overspeed control relative to continuously-variable gearing

The control is based on fuzzy logic (14) operating on the instantaneous or continuous engine speed signal (12) which is differentiated (16) and stored for detection of incipient loss of speed. Another signal is supplied from an accelerator pedal position sensor (21) via a low-pass filter. The logic provides a modified fuzzy factor signal (22) to an error-computing module (24) which receives other inputs (26,30) representing the instantaneous transmission ratio and the maximum allowable error. A target response signal (32) is computed and applied to the continuously variable transmission (34) to maintain the desired engine speed.
