PURPOSE:To eliminate gradation turburance, etc., peculiar to a time sharing gradation display method by appropriately setting the decay time constant of a phosphor. CONSTITUTION:A spacer 22 for forming a discharge space is put in between an insulating substrate 21 and a translucent face plate 20. A cathode lead 4, a resistance 5, and a cathode connection terminal 11 are formed on the substrate 21, and these are covered with an dielectric layer 30 except for a part of the cathode connection terminal 11, and cathode 3 is formed on the layer 30. A display anode 1 is formed on the face plate 20, and an auxiliary anode 2 is provided in an auxiliary discharge space 7, and an auxiliary discharge is generated between the cathode 3 and the auxiliary anode 2. A phosphor 8 is applied on the surface of a wall of a display space 6, and an ultraviolet ray generated by the discharge between an anode 1 and the cathode 3 makes the phosphor 8 emit light. The decay time constant of the phosphor is set at an appropriate length and an optimum value as a decay time constant is determined depending on a maximum undischarged period between neighoring fields. |
