PURPOSE:To obtain a carboxylic acid or an ester thereof useful as a synthetic raw material, etc., for solvents, plasticizers, medicines and agricultural chemicals by reacting an organic halide with CO and water or an alcohol in the presence of a group VIII transition metal catalyst and zeolite. CONSTITUTION:A compound expressed by formula I (R<1> is aromatic group, aralkyl, alkenyl or alkyl; X is I, Br or Cl) is reacted with a compound expressed by formula II (R<2> is H, alkyl, aralkyl, alkenyl or aryl) and CO in the presence of a group VIII transition metal catalyst and zeolite, preferably in a polar solvent such as THF or chloroform at 50-150 deg.C under <=50atm partial pressure of CO to produce a compound expressed by formula III. Iron carbonyl, cobalt chloride, (Ph3P)2PdCl2, etc., are cited as the group VIII transition metal catalyst and the amount thereof used is preferably (1/500)-(1/3) equiv. based on the halogen compound. |
